Natural Gas v. Electricity: A Simple Cost Comparison

So, let’s get the easy part out of the way: is natural gas expensive? The answer, we can happily say, is no. In fact, it’s not expensive at all! When compared to oil and propane, the two other common fuel sources in the United States, natural gas is more cost-effective than both—and not by a minor margin!

We’d like to do a bit of a demonstration here, but before we do, we’ll have to clear something up. The trouble with comparisons between fuel types is that they are measured differently. For example, while electricity is measured in kilowatts per hour (KWH), natural gas is commonly measured in therms. So, how then, can we compare the two? By converting them to BTU (British Thermal Units).

A quick calculation tells us that 1KWH translates to 3,412 BTU, while 1 therm translates to 100,000 BTU. You’re probably getting the picture by now, yes? Natural gas is, on a rough average, a third of the cost of the other two, or less!

Of course, that number is going to waffle around a bit, depending on use, application, location, utility company chosen, and more. There are a lot of variables at hand, which is why you want to be sure you’re choosing the right utility service to suit your needs.
