Information on Electricity Deregulation in Pennsylvania

Many states throughout the northeast—including Pennsylvania—now have a deregulated electricity market, but are you familiar with what deregulation is and what it means for you, your family, and your small business? It means access to more options and lower rates on electricity services—and the opportunity to save money!

What is Electricity Deregulation?

Under electricity regulation, Pennsylvanians had only one option when it came to choosing an electricity provider—including utilities such as Met-Ed, Penelec, PPL, West Penn Power, and some other providers. Electricity deregulation opens up the electricity market and enables multiple service providers—such as UGI EnergyLink—to compete.

The purpose of electricity deregulation is to lower prices and increase customer satisfaction by introducing competition into the market.

Who is Impacted by Electricity Deregulation?

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has prepared a detailed map that outlines electricity deregulation by state. Most homeowners and businesses in these states have the option to switch providers (from their utility to a deregulated supplier). Electric customers in these states are becoming more aware of these new choices available to them, and are becoming more inclined to make the switch.

What Pricing Options are Offered by Deregulated Electricity Providers?

As a result of electricity deregulation, UGI EnergyLink can offer two pricing arrangements for residential and commercial electric customers: a fixed pricing option and an indexed pricing option. Fixed pricing is an excellent option for customers who must meet specific budget criteria with a constant price for the entire period. Indexed pricing is suitable for customers who are able to accept some level of risk by taking advantage of marketing pricing. Wholesale market conditions will dictate whether rates go up or down.

Do Deregulated Electric Suppliers Offer High Quality of Service?

You can expect excellent quality of service and reliability when you make UGI EnergyLink your electric supplier. UGI EnergyLink is a member of PJM, and all of our deliveries are coordinated through PJM Interconnection, a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Your public utility will continue to provide metering and safety services, and it will also continue to serve as the appropriate point of contact for various electric issues you may encounter. Additionally, the utility will continue to send you a monthly bill. But now, UGI EnergyLink will appear on the bill as your electricity provider.

Does UGI EnergyLink Offer Residential and Commercial Electric Service?

As a result of electricity deregulation, residential, commercial, and industrial customers can now switch to alternative electricity suppliers in an effort to manage the generation and transmission costs on their electricity bills. As such, UGI EnergyLink offers both residential and commercial electric service.
